Manusath Derana

Prison Donation

Prison Donation
On Sri Lanka’s Independence Day, prisoners sentenced to death are given a rare chance to reconnect with their families—a day symbolically called their “day of freedom.” Traditionally, this moment is marked by sharing a special meal brought by loved ones, a fleeting taste of home amid confinement. Yet this year, their choice was profoundly different. Instead of receiving food or savouring time with family, they asked that the gesture be transformed into something far greater: the donation of schoolbooks and stationery to Manusath Derana, so that vulnerable children could continue their education. This act of selflessness is deeply moving. In the shadow of their own fate, they chose to invest in the future of others. By giving up their comfort, they gave hope—reminding us that education is the only bridge to opportunity for many children. Their decision speaks to the resilience of human dignity: even in the darkest places, compassion can light the way.
